Adhesives: PU and waterborne dispersions

Reactive PU adhesives and waterborne dispersion adhesives are distinct technologies. Components are selected after the process is defined.

Technical challenges

  • Select the technology for the substrate pair
  • Define application, assembly and cure
  • Test joint strength and aging

What to include in your brief

  • Materials, preparation and joint geometry
  • Open time, pressing and curing conditions
  • Required resistance and application restrictions

Technology approaches

  • 1K moisture-curing PU adhesives: a ready-to-use prepolymer reacts with moisture. Selection requires humidity, substrate and curing conditions.
  • 2K reactive PU adhesives: components are mixed before application. Ratio, mixing quality and working time follow the selected system’s documentation.
  • Waterborne dispersion adhesives: select the binder type and bonding process separately. For PUD, confirm whether heat activation and a compatible crosslinker are needed.
